Research is a social process. Unfortunately, the primary mechanisms for communicating research have not always reflected this responsibility. This talk will explore how and why researchers are turning towards wider open research publication practices, connecting with a growing network of interested collaborators and readers, and getting their research out there through blogs and social media. The benefits are apparent but there are still a number of barriers to a vibrant scholarly communication ecosystem. Institutions and publishers must work together to support efficient scholarly communication across the research lifecycle.
